About Us
Our Purpose
SHABE exists to promote educational opportunities and recognition for bilingual and ESL teachers.
Founder
Diana Garcia Marion is a dedicated educator who devoted 41 years in service to children. After 5 years of teaching in Aldine ISD and 1 year at Stephen F. Austin State University, she started working in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and holds the distinction of being the first bilingual teacher hired for the CFISD Bilingual program. After teaching at Matzke, Lamkin, and Francone Elementary schools, she became the Bilingual/ESL Coordinator where she advocated for students who were learning English as a second language. Ms. Marion's devotion to ELL students and their teachers inspired her and her colleagues to initiate both HAABE (Houston Area Association for Bilingual Education) and SHABE (Suburban Houston Association of Bilingual Educators). Her influence is still felt through the professional development and teacher recognition programs that are at the heart of SHABE.
